Yes, I’m still taking a break. But I haven’t had a year quite like this one before. I wanted to say something before it gets away from me.

I don’t want to compile a list of pop-culture faves here. Of course I have opinions about movies, music, literature, and important events from the past year. Pretty much everyone does. Though I doubt I’ll remember which albums I had on rotation or which public figures made the biggest headlines.

This is what I’ll remember:

I graduated from college. Those were four of the most challenging and ultimately satisfying years of my life. I’m also still getting used to speaking about my college years in the past tense. Keep in mind that I graduated in May.

I traveled a lot this year, easily more than I have in the last four years. I traveled throughout northern India with my grandmother in January. I didn’t have any travel plans beyond that wonderful whirlwind of a trip. Until in late June I finally decided I was ready to travel solo. The following month I found myself en route to Stockholm. Two months later, I’d traveled to Denmark, Sweden, France, and Ireland; completed four volunteer posts; and I knew how to milk cows and goats.

I decided to move to Portland, OR.

I learned a lot about myself, the people in my life, and the world in which I live.

I learned that people can make any experience worthwhile and, perhaps, there’s room for spontaneity in my life.

I learned that I have the capacity to surprise myself.

I hate to reduce all of my significant experiences to list format, but here you go.

I want to wish everyone a lovely, peaceful new year. I hope 2013 brings with it plenty of beautiful moments. Regardless whether or not you believe in making New Year’s resolutions, take care of yourselves and others.

Yes, things have been a tad quiet around here. I didn’t plan this initially, but I’ve decided to take a break from blogging. I need to get a few things sorted out.

Enjoy the holidays. Spend plenty of time with family and friends. And eat well. I know I will.

Take care.
